Enhancing Technical Documentation: A Guide to Creating Red Lines in IDP

In the world of technical and industrial design, maintaining accurate and up-to-date documentation is paramount. Red lines play a crucial role in this process, enabling engineers and designers to mark up existing drawings with changes, notes, or corrections. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to create red lines within the IDP (Intelligent Drawing Platform), ensuring your technical documentation remains precise and comprehensive.

Introduction to Red Lines

Red lines are annotations or markings added to technical drawings to indicate modifications, comments, or corrections. They are essential for communicating updates or issues within a project, helping maintain clarity and accuracy in documentation.

Getting Started with IDP

  1. Access the Drawing
    • Begin by opening the desired drawing in the IDP. The red line feature is accessed through the menu located at the bottom of the screen. Look for the red line icon, which is second from the left.
  2. Setting the Zoom Level
    • Before you start drawing, ensure you are at an appropriate zoom level. The zoom level you choose will be saved as you draw, so it’s important to have a clear view of the area you are marking up.

Creating Red Lines

  1. Choosing Your Red Line Type
    • Preset Symbols: The IDP allows you to use preset symbols from a legend. For example, to add a check valve, select the symbol, click on the canvas to place it, and resize it as needed. Confirm the placement by clicking the check box.
    • Clouding: This option lets you draw a cloud shape around an area. Click to start, move in a counterclockwise direction to create the boundary, and close the loop by clicking the draw option.
    • Freehand Drawing: Use this tool for custom lines and symbols. It works like a pencil, allowing you to draw freely on the canvas.
  2. Adding Text
    • To add text to your drawing, click the text box icon, then click on the area where you want the text to appear. You can move the text, adjust its size, and change its color using the available tools. Once satisfied, confirm by clicking the check box.

Saving and Managing Red Lines

  1. Saving Your Red Line
    • After completing your red line annotations, save your work by clicking the save option at the top right of the screen. Name your red line and add a description if necessary. This red line will now be part of your red line inventory, accessible through the icon at the far right of the screen.
  2. Editing and Deleting Red Lines
    • You can revisit your red lines at any time by clicking on the red line inventory icon. Here, you can view, edit, or delete red lines as needed. To edit, click the edit option to make changes. To delete, simply select the red line and remove it from the inventory.

Expanding the Stencil Library

  1. Adding More Symbols
    • If you need additional symbols for your red lines, navigate to the takeoff section of the IDP. In the block classification inventory, select the icons you want to add as stencils. For example, to add a gate valve, find the symbol, check the box, and it will become available in your red line options.

Creating red lines in IDP is a straightforward process that significantly enhances the accuracy and clarity of technical documentation. By following these steps, engineers and designers can efficiently communicate updates and modifications, ensuring all team members are on the same page. Whether you're adding preset symbols, drawing freehand, or incorporating text, the IDP provides the tools needed to keep your documentation precise and up-to-date. This meticulous approach to documentation not only streamlines project workflows but also minimizes errors, contributing to the overall success of engineering and design projects.
